KWLS also known as Kedarnath musk deer Sanctuary. It is located in Rudraprayag and Chamoli District of Uttarakhand State. Its alternate name comes from its primary purpose of protecting the endangered Himalayan musk deer. The area of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary is 975squre Km, and this sanctuary is world-famous for its biodiversity and animal diversity (particularly of ungulate species).it is the largest protected area in the western Himalayas.

It is famous for diverse alpine forest, ungulate species- musk deer, Himalayan Thar, Himalayan Black bear, Snow Leopard, etc, and some birds like Monal, Koklass, and Himalayan Griffon, etc.

Geography of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary

It lies in the Himalayan Highlands with an elevation ranging from 1,160 m (3,810 ft) (near Phata Guptkashi) to the Chaukhamba peak at 7,068 m.

Its higher altitudes are characterized by glaciers which have, through glacial action over centuries, created deep "v" shaped valleys in the sanctuary. River valleys, generally in a north-south direction, are formed by the Mandakini, Kali, Biera, Balasuti and Menan rivers.

When it declared a Wildlife Sanctuary

It was a notified reserve forest between 1916 and 1920. It was changed to a sanctuary on 21 January 1972 and declared a Wildlife Sanctuary under " by the IUCN. The area of the park has expanded from 967–975 ha (2,390–2,409 acres) when it declared a Sanctuary.
